Troubleshooting problems connecting to RemoteApps using Registered Shortcuts via Windows

This article outlines a common issue that impacts access to our RemoteApp platform after an SSL renewal process has taken place on our RemoteApp server infrastructure.

Problem Summary

After an SSL certificate maintenance routine is undertaken on the infrastructure that hosts the Remote Desktop Services components, we sometimes see reports of issues connecting to customer hosted RemoteApps when using the Remote Desktop Services shortcuts that are registered via a Web Feed subscription in Windows clients. If you use shortcuts to your RemoteApps via the "My Remote Apps" folder in your computers Start-Menu or via Pinned shortcuts on the taskbar, these mitigation steps apply to you.

Solution / Workaround

To resolve from connection errors you need to refresh your computers subscription to our RemoteApps Platform web feed that provides the up-to-date shortcuts secured using the latest SSL certificate running on our infrastructure.

Steps to refresh your registered shortcuts in Windows:

  1. Open the legacy Control Panel by typing 'Control Panel' into your Start-Menu search box. Once Control Panel opens, navigate to RemoteApp and Desktop Connections.

  2. Now click on View Details link.

  3. Now click on the Update now button to force a refresh of the shortcuts registered on your computer. This process might prompt you to re-enter your login credentials. You need to enter the username and password that you use to login to a RemoteApp on our platform.
  4. This process should result in an ✅ Update successful message at the bottom of the screen with a recent timestamp. You can now re-try opening a RemoteApp from your Start-Menu shortcuts. We also advise if you use Pinned Shortcuts on the taskbar to remove and re-pin these shortcuts if you are still experiencing issues.
